LearnLinks is a year-round after-school program for youth in grades K-8 living in Human Solutions’ affordable housing complexes. The program fosters greater academic achievement in public school, builds positive character traits and leadership skills, increases parent participation in the academic life of their children, and supports the overall stability of families. Key program elements are:

  • Homework Club: Extra help in difficult subject areas and time to complete homework in a caring, supportive learning environment.
  • Community Leaders: Middle school youth chosen for this role learn positive social behaviors while they mentor their younger counterparts, providing tutoring and modeling responsible behavior.
  • Service Learning: As Community Leaders gain confidence in their leadership and mentoring skills, service learning allows them to make a difference in their communities and experience the personal satisfaction of helping others.

Volunteer with LearnLinks!

We are seeking after school tutors for youth in K-8th grade. Here’s how it works:

  • After-school tutoring volunteers assist with reading for youth in K-2nd grade, facilitate language learning games with 3-5th graders, and/or assist with middle school math.
  • Where? Tutoring takes place in community rooms in Human Solutions housing communities, in four locations around the Mill Park, Cherry Park and Rockwood neighborhoods in East Portland/Multnomah County.
  • Language Skills? No second language skills are necessary for these volunteer positions. However, many of our youth are English Language Learners  so individuals with Russian, Somali, and/or Spanish skills are strongly encouraged to apply!
  • When? This position runs from October to June each year, with 1.5-3 hours/week of tutoring happening on a Monday to Thursday between 3 and 6 PM.
  • Who? You! Volunteers must be able to pass a background check and commit to at least a semester.
  • Questions? Contact Tonya, LearnLinks Program Manager, at: tparson@humansolutions.org
  • Apply today! Fill out an application to get the process started.

If you are interested in leading Art, Science or Community Service projects on a one-time basis, let us know! We can make that happen, too!
